Shitajiki (下敷き, したじき, lit. “desk pad (mat)”)

A special pad made of felt, used under the calligraphy paper during writing. There are plain colour shitajiki, as well as those with grids printed on them. The latter is mostly used by beginners or children at school learning shūji (習字, しゅうじ, lit. “studying characters”), or for studying shakyō (写経, しゃきょう, i.e. “copying Buddhist sutras”). Shitajki is very useful. Not only does it absorb the excessive amount of ink that soaks through the thin calligraphy paper, but it assists the brush in spreading the ink in a more graceful manner.
