Mushin (無心, むしん)

Literary, it means “nothingness in heart”, and it is a Zen Buddhism term. Mushin is a deep meditative state of being free from obstructive thoughts. One of the methods of achieving a state of mushin is through writing or admiring calligraphy. During mushin, the brush becomes the extension of the artist’s soul, consequently, the final work will become a mirror image of that very soul. Calligraphy written with complete emotional detachment, are truly mesmerising works of art.
