Mian paper (棉紙, Chinese: Mián zhǐ)

This is so-called “cotton” paper, although none of its ingredients is cotton. One of three main types of Chinese calligraphy paper (the others are 宣紙 (Chinese: Xuān zhǐ) and 毛邊紙 (Chinese: Máo biān zhǐ) paper). Neither Máo biān nor Mián papers are handmade (unlike Xuān paper) and are usually used only for practice. Both types are widely sold outside China. Máo biān and Mián paper are of inferior quality in comparison to Xuān paper.
