Inkstone shore (硯区, すずりく, suzuriku)

A symbolic part of the inkstone. The “shore” is the part of an inkstone that separates the “temple” (墨堂, ぼくどう, bokudō) from the “well” (墨池, ぼくち, bokuchi), i.e. the place where the ink is being ground from the one where ready-made ink is being stored. It is a symbolic barrier between the two worlds of Yin (cold and hardened ink) and Yang (supple yet thick ink liquid ready to use). To read more about inkstones, please click here.
