Ink grinding machine (墨すり機, すみすりき, sumisuriki)

An electric machine for grinding hardened ink. Traditionally ink sticks were meant to be ground by hand, which agrees with the philosophy and nature of the calligraphy art. However, calligraphers often use ink grinding machines, especially for preparing greater amounts of ink for larger works. Preparation of ink for daily writing can take more than half an hour. If one had to grind ink by hand for a large scale work, it could take a few hours or up to a whole day. In ancient China, calligraphers had servants or assistants who prepared ink before each writing session.
