Edo period (江戸時代, えどじだい, 1603-1868)

Also known as the Tokugawa period (徳川時代, とくがわ じだい, Tokugawa jidai), during which Japan was ruled by the shoguns of the Tokugawa family. Starting with the early 17th century, Japan enters a long period of cultural isolation. New styles based on 和様書道 (わようしょどう, wayōshodō) were created: 御家流 (おいえ りゅう, o-ie ryū, lit. “noble family style”). It was also referred to as a “samurai family style”, and was pursued in the famous Terakoya (寺子屋, てらこや) school. Please refer to the history of Japanese calligraphy section here, for more detailed information.
