Zenshi

Zenshi (全紙, ぜんし, lit. “whole paper”)

Full (size) paper. The name of a specific size of calligraphy paper, with dimensions 1350 x 700 mm (those may differ depending on the manufacturer or the purpose). Zenshi for sumi-e (墨絵, すみえ, ink painting) is of a different size. Half of zenshi is called hansetsu (半切, はんせつ, lit. “half size”), which further can be cut into smaller pieces referred to as hanshi (半紙, はんし, lit. “half paper”). Dispite its name (“whole paper”), zenshi is not the largest commercially manufactured calligraphy paper. To read more about calligraphy paper please click here.
