Tokonoma

Tokonoma (床の間, とこのま, i.e. “an alcove in the traditional Japanese style room”)

Tokonoma, lit. “a gap in the floor / tatami”, is a special place in the Japanese style room (和室, わしつ, washitsu) designed for displaying hanging scrolls (掛け軸, かけじく, kakejiku), flower arrangement (生け花, いけばな, ikebana), or other items for artistic appreciation. Tokonoma is the most respected place in a traditional Japanese household.
