Sekijiro

Sekijiro (惜字炉, せきじろ)

Traditional shrines for burning unwanted calligraphy paper with Chinese characters written on it. It shows the great respect the art of calligraphy has earned here in the Far East. Sekijiro originated in China and they are known there as 惜字塔 (Chinese: Xī zì tǎ), i.e. “the pagoda of regretted characters”.
