OilLampSootBasedInk

Oil lamp soot based ink (油煙墨, ゆえんぼく, yuen boku)

One of two main types of hardened ink (the other one is 松煙墨 (しょうえんぼく, shōenboku), i.e. “pine soot based ink”). Soot particles of the oil lampblack are of a fine grain and uniform size, which results in a shiny deep black and consistent colour of ink. Various oils are used for its production however the most popular are sesame seed oil and rapeseed oil. Oil-lamp soot-based ink is cheaper and easier to produce than the pine soot based one. Consequently it tends to be cheaper.
