Logographic writing system

Logographic writing systems include the oldest writing systems on Earth, of the first historical civilizations of the Near East, Central America, China and Africa. Recent archaeological research suggests that Chinese writing system is is at least 7000 years old, 1500 years older than what was thought to be the most ancient written language on Earth until recently – Sumerian cuneiform, dated at 3500 B.C. Logographs are the smallest language units carrying a meaning (morphemes). The Chinese writing system is not a pure logographic script, and there are six major groups into which we can classify Chinese characters. Logograms (or logographs) are commonly known also as ideograms.
