Genji Monogatari (源氏物語、げんじものがたり)

The Tale of Genji (in Japanese: Genji Monogatari) is a classic work of Japanese literature (also referred to as the world’s first novel) attributed to maid of honour of the Japanese imperial court, Murasaki Shikibu (紫 式部, むらさき しきぶ, c. 973 – c. 1014 or 1025 C.E.), written in the first years of 11th century C.E. - the peak of the Heian period (平安時代, へいんじだい, 794 - 1185). Genji Monogatari was written in Japanese script, called kana (かな). To read more about kana, please click here.
